Catalina Melendez, a longtime resident of the Bronx, died on November 17, 2017. She was 90.
She was born in the town of Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico on December 15, 1926. She was the daughter of Mr. Cruz Rivera and Mrs. Maria Jesus Fontanez. She grew up in the town of La Mesa in Caguas, Puerto Rico, and she was fondly called LALA. When she was 17, she married Francisco Figueroa and they had a daughter, Norma Iris. After her separation from Francisco, she met her second husband, Manuel Melendez. Lala and Manuel worked very hard in agriculture, on the farm sowing tabacco, growing fruits and vegetables to support their family. Together they had four sons and two daughters. In 1967, Lala with her husband Manuel moved to the Bronx, New York where they raised their children. She was a hardworking, loving, good woman, an exemplary mother, and a great servant of God. She taught her family the way of the Lord.
She is survived by her sister, Isabel, seven (7) children Jose, Anibal, Ramon, Alfredo, Norma, Carmen and Aleja. Her (22) Grandchildren: Jose, Manuel, Raymond, Johnny, Alfredo, Pedro, Juan, Joshua and Marc. Granddaughters: Maribel, Naida, Norma, Marisol, Diana, Annie, Elizabeth, Nancy, Lydia, Jessica, Zoraida, Arlene and Marsha and many great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. On this day we do not celebrate her death but her wonderful happy life, full of many good memories with her family. We thank God for her, for her love and we will never forget her. We will not say goodbye, but we will see you again -Mama Lala.
Visiting will be Tuesday 4-9pm, with a service at 7pm, at Joseph A. Lucchese Funeral Home, 726 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx. The family will gather at the funeral home Wednesday 9:30am and the interment will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery, 2600 Lafayette Avenue, Bronx.
